How to get a .1.vg domain name

 Comment
FreeDNS

Some times visitors arrive here googling for how to get a .1.vg domain name (yes, I told you, I spy you), so I'm finally going to say you how to get it, then you can stop searching.

You can get one at FreeDNS, where you can host your domain with a free DNS services with access to A, NS, MX, CNAME, TXT, ... records or web forward.

With a free account you are allowed to register five domains (if I'm right), either a top level domain (like a .com) or a subdomain from the more than 30,000 they have registered as .1.vg. And giving donations you get access to TTL and wildcards and the records number quota is increased.

Reloacting system DLLs

 Comment

What a week. Microsoft puts its foot in it and then I have to fix it, of course, its what have to happen.

It this sentences does also sound familiar to you:

Illegal System DLL Relocation The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

Be calm, it doesn't mean that it's time to format or call your tech-slacky, it's only that Windows has decidided to compensate your faithfulness with its last update with bug. And I'm going to compensate your faithfulness as my reader and one of my visitors using Windows (yes, I spy you) telling you how to fix it saving you searching, you only have to install the following patch:

WindowsXP-KB935448-x86-ENU

El precio del café

 Comment

AVI MP4 FLV

How to fix flash player to work on any browser

 Comment
Campaign for a non-browser-specific WWW

Update: Opera 9.50 seems to solve this problem. Check your version and update if needed.

After a serious vulnerability had been discovered in Acrobat Reader for PDF, one of the leading products from Adobe now becoming a standard, which affected all browsers now the online video format they are also trying to introduce as a standard doesn't work with some browsers. You can check that Flash plugin for Linux (it seems that also affects Windows) doesn't play FLV video with Opera (you can also find cases with Firefox or Konqueror). You can find many reports of many users with this problem, I also had my fight with it. Finally, Gentoo Bugzilla gave me the answer:

sed -ie "s/netscape/flashsux/g" /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so

Supposing that /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so is the location of the plugin, it wil be fixed and you'll have a Flash pugin suitable for any browser. But this fix has an issue: it's illegal bcause it violates Flash EULA), so I can't recommend its use :-).

In the same source is cited a legal solution consisting of locating the plugins in browser plugins directory:

ln -s /opt/netscape/plugins/flashplayer.xpt /opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins/flashplayer.xpt
ln -s /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so /opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins/libflashplayer.so

Supposing that /opt/netscape/plugins is the directory where Flash plugin is located and /opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins is the browser's plugins directory.

Meanwhile, Opera wants a standard for web video based on Ogg Theora and mantained by W3C freed from plugins, licenses and patents.

What browser do you want to use today? Who cares?

Babas de caracol y ADN vegetal nativo

 Comment

FLV

Opera web browser with usage report tool for Gentoo

 Comment

Opera has just announced through its desktop team the releasing of a new developing version for betatesting that includes a tool that makes reports about browser usage and configuration and without private information to send it anonymously to the company to improve the browser. Someone named this Opera 'Spyware', though it's a feature not present in official releases, which can be deactivated, you can read reports before sending it and the browser warns you about this the first time it's run.

You can find more information in Opera desktop team blog.

And as Opera and Gentoo fan I had to made my ebuild to install this Opera version using Gentoo package system. And here's the ebuild. It's KEYWORD masked, for more info read A Portage introduction.

I want him in the games until he dies playing

AVI MP4 FLV

Tron (1981) (is from where I took the phrase for the title) was one of the first movies to use scenes generated by computer. This movie talks about "life" inside computers. Characters live games as if they were real and the game seen in the video has been developed for PC becoming very popular and one of my favorites for Linux. Yes, there are games for Linux although many people says that you can't play in Linux. In fact, I have made a list of Linux games which I was going to post here, but since it became very large, I published it in documents section.
